The Milano Eagles began district play Friday night with a tough loss against the Snook Bluejays 22-7. The Eagles are now 1-3 on the season.

“I was impressed with our effort in the second half,” MHS Coach Chad Lagrone said. “We played hard, and we gave ourselves a chance to win but we didn’t capitalize on the opportunities that we should have.”

The Eagles entered the game short-handed for the second week in a row with starting quarterback Ethen Knight still dealing with back spasms.

In the first quarter, both defenses played a solid game with neither team recording any points. The Bluejays struck first in the second quarter with David Davila intercepting a tipped pass and returning it for a 25-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good.

The Bluejays got on the board again in the quarter with Garrett Lero connecting with Deshun Hamilton on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Davila caught a pass to convert the two-point conversion making the score 14-0 at the half.

At the beginning of the third quarter, the Lero-and-Hamilton duo struck again with Lero dialing up a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton. Jermaine Kearney caught the two-point conversion pass to make the score 22-0 after three quarters.

The Eagles would score their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter with Josh Millar punching in a one-yard run.

Millar had another great showing with 120 rushing yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Jayce Todd led the Eagles in passing going four of eight for 27 yards while Hector Munoz led the team in receiving with four catches for 27 yards. Jeremy Reyes led the team in tackles with 10.

The Eagles put themselves at a disadvantage in turnover departments with the offense fumbling the ball five times and losing four of them.

Despite the loss, Coach Lagrone says he feels good about where this team sits at this point in the season.

“The guys were upset after the game which is good to see,” Lagrone said. “They knew they had a chance to win the game, but we have to take care of the ball better. Every game in this division is going to be tough. I feel like if we can cut the turnovers in half, we’ll give ourselves a much better chance to win games.”

Milano looks to get back into the win column this week when they travel to Somerville to face the 1-3 Yeguas on Friday.
