MILANO—Friday night was business as usual for the Milano Eagle football team, who improved their 2022 record to 3-0 after beating Meridian, 51-6.
The Eagles got hot in the opening quarter after quarterback Chris Vasquez found Josh Millar open for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Milano scored twice more in the first with runs by Millar and Ethan Gordon, both for seven yards. With two missed extra points, the Milam County squad led 19-0 at the close of the first.
Spectators at Pruitt Field saw a second quarter somewhat identical to the first, with Millar putting the Eagles up 26-0 on a 69-yard run.
Gordon also made his way back to the end zone not too long after that with a six-yard TD run and before the end of the first half, Vasquez found Millar again for 50-yard TD pass. The Eagles went into halftime leading, 40-0.
Milano scored twice more in the third, with Millar crossing the goal line for a fifth time on a 30-yard sprint and MHS sophomore Anthony Valadez scoring on a 21-yard run.
Meridian scored once on an 18-yard pass in the fourth quarter, but it was a hardly a factor as the Eagles went on to take the game.
STATS— Millar, who has racked up 448 rushing yards in his team’s first three games, led the team with 137 yards on eight carries. Sophomore Andres Ruelas was Milano’s second leading rusher with 86 yards on seven carries while Gordon had nine carries for 71 yards.
From behind the center, Vasquez was 2-of-5 for 75 yards.
This is the first Milano football team to begin a season 3-0 since 2017, when Kyle King played quarterback for the Eagles. King now plays the same position at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, whom he helped lead to a Division III national title last season.
THIS WEEK— MHS plays their final non-district contest this Friday, traveling to the Houston suburbs to take on Cypress Christian School.
The Warriors are 2-2 this season with a 54-0 shutout over Bryan’s Brazos Christian School in their season opener and are coming off a 49-7 road victory over Northland Christian this past week.
For fans attending, the stadium is located right next to the school. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
