Last Friday, the Milano Eagles battled with Hearne, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 22nd-ranked team in Class 2A, and fell 64-54 in a game that was tied during the third quarter.

Jayce Todd led with 20 and Layne Telg had 13.

MHS also lost in Thorndale last Tuesday 46-35.

They outscored their Milam County neighbors in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a first quarter when the Bulldogs were hot from beyond the arc and took a 15-5 lead.

Todd and Telg were leading scorers with 16 and eight.

The two losses are hardly an indicator of how the young Eagle team has played this season.

Other than their losses to Hearne and Thorndale, the only other team MHS has lost to in district was Holland on the road 64-54 on Jan. 15.

The 2-4 Eagles scored big wins over Granger (66-35) and Thrall (67-60) with hopes for the fourth and final playoff spot, with their main competition being the latter.

Thrall sits at 4-2 through six district games but they’ve already played winless Granger twice and even though they beat Thorndale, they have to play them at home in their second meeting.

If MHS can beat Thrall on Friday and finish with the same record as Thrall at the close of district, the Eagles will earn their first playoff berth since 2017.

They played Holland on Tuesday after press time and tip-off with the Tigers on Friday at 7 p.m.

LADY EAGLES—The girls also had to face a challenging Hearne team on Friday.

They lost 51-25 to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s 22nd-ranked team in Class 2A.

Natalie Compton led with nine and Aaliyah McBrewer had eight.

Milano faced Holland on Tuesday and play in their season finale on Friday at home with Thrall.

The Lady Eagles are 1-7 as of press time.

BULLDOGS—Thorndale’s boys fell to 3-3 in district on Friday night with a 41-38 loss to Holland.

“They’re better than they have been,” said Michael Williams, THS head basketball coach. “(And) we just couldn’t put the ball in the hole. I think we shot thirty-percent from the field.”

The Bulldogs went into the third quarter up 30-29 but Holland was able to make it a two-possession game late in the fourth and held to take the game from Thorndale.

Chance Betak led with 10 and Logan Davis had eight.

THS beat Milano at home three days before that 46-35.

Betak and Davis were also leading scorers with 13 each. Blake Roberts had nine.

As of Tuesday, the Bulldogs sit at third place behind Thrall and tied with Holland.

THS played Thrall in Thorndale after press time and has to play undefeated Hearne again on Friday.

They finish out their district schedule next week with games against Granger and Milano.

Game time with Hearne is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Bulldog Gym.

LADY BULLDOGS— The Thorndale girls got the opportunity to rest Friday evening when COVID-19 concerns with Holland’s girls basketball team led to postponing the game.

THS last played three days before when they hosted Milano and won 70-23, beating the Lady Eagles for the second time in six days.

Thorndale returned to district play on Tuesday after press time against Thrall. They beat the Tigerettes 58-27 on Jan. 15, in Williamson County marking the Lady Bulldogs 13th consecutive victory over Thrall since 2014.

Coach Bradley Dickerson and his team have another night off due to Granger having COVID-19 concerns as well. Due to this being their last scheduled district game, the next time Thorndale will play will be in the bi-district playoffs.

With it looking like THS will finish second in District 27-2A, they are now waiting to see who the third place team from the other district will be.

In District 28-2A, Flatonia sits in third right now at 6-4 with two more games to play but had to take on fourthplace Shiner Tuesday before having to face them again Saturday.

Saturday’s game will be the third game in three days for Shiner, who also has to play games on Thursday and Friday against zero win Louise and second-place Weimar as well.
