A COLUMN TO BE NAMED LATER
This isn’t officially my last edition, but next week’s space is going to be reserved for a column named “Ten things Rockdale can do to avoid becoming the Mississippi of the Austin Metro.”— wt— If you haven’t heard, my last day is this Friday/ Saturday. I want to thank everyone for making me feel supported and I particularly want to thank all of the coaches who, even when their group wasn’t having the best of days, were willing to open up and take the time to tell me all about their teams. Probably my favorite part of this job (besides pizza every Tuesday and breakfast tacos every Wednesday) has been listening to coaches and witnessing how much they care about their craft and how much they care about the kids they teach and coach. —wt— For those who don’t know, I’m leaving my job to travel around South Amer ic a for a couple months. I don’t know how many more times I’ll get the chance to be fun-employed, so I’m doing it! Last time I tr ied this was three weeks before COVID-19 shut the world down. So yes, I’m very anxious that Murphy’s Law will be in full effect. Also, the airline I’m scheduled to f ly wit h f rom Mexico City to Medellin, Colombia suspended operations last month. —wt— For all the people who live in or around Rockdale, if a restaurant or fast food place has a mobile app, use it. Thank me later.
—wt— Also, if you live in Rockdale and your car has a working turn signal light, use it. —wt— Oh, and I still want to thank some more people.
I want to thank my boss Kyle Cooke for giving me the space to be creative and trusting me to just get everything done (no matter how late at night I got it done). I’ve had jobs before where that wasn’t the case and couldn’t be more grateful for his approach.
I also want to thank my co-workers Suzy Ammon, Shannon Whorton and Mary Lou Loehr for making me feel valued and being my friends. I always like the slow days at The Reporter when I more often than not end up talking to one of them for 30 minutes straight.
