Driver, Fisher provide sparkling performances on the mound

FRANKLIN—The No. 1 Thorndale Bulldogs took the next step towards a state tournament appearance, sweeping out Iola.

The Bulldogs finished off Iola Saturday afternoon 4-2 to advance to the Class 2A Region IV quarterfinals against Evadale.

Thorndale (29-3-1) and Evadale will play the first game of their three-game series Friday at 7 p.m. at Sam Houston in Huntsville.

The second game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday with a third game to follow if needed.

“We got two great pitching performances again from Logan Fisher and Coleby Driver,” said Thorn-dale Coach Kelly Kuhl. “We had a couple of errors on Saturday, but our kids responded and turned a double play on the very next batter both times to get us out of a jam.

“We have to do a better job of situational hitting this week if we plan to win.”

After Iola crossed the plate once in the first inning, Thorndale pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning after Ashton Albert clubbed a solo homer and Cory Huber singled to score two runs.

Driver allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out six for the win.

With Logan Fisher on the mound, Thorndale shut out Iola 5-0 in the series opener.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning as Trey Ortiz’s sac fly scored one run.

Fisher turned in a complete game, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out five and walking one.

Thorndale tallied six hits as Driver and Fisher each racked up multiple hits.
