The Rockdale Girls Softball League is officially back in action.
After the COVID pandemic put this season in uncertainty, the girls returned to swinging bats and throwing strikes at Rockdale Girls Softball field last Thursday evening.
Players in the 15 and under (15U) and 12 and under (12U) leagues were back into the rhythm of playing ball, with stretching and warm-ups, followed by agility and throwing drills.
“I am super excited to be back out here and see all the girls,” RGSL President Pete Rubio said. “With the girls not being able to do anything for nearly three months they did better than I thought they would.”
Practice lasted for an hour and 30 minutes. Other activities included pitching, catching and conditioning drills along with some live batting drills to finish up the practice.
Parents at the practice were also excited at having the girls back on the field.
Tristan Carmichael, father of 15U league player Meagan “Wheels” Carmichael,” said he was happy to see his daughter out there again and able to enjoy one of her hobbies.
“I’m happy she gets to get out of the house and do what she loves to do,” Carmichael said. “I expect for all the girls to have a great season.
“Honestly, I felt like the girls should have started playing awhile ago,” he said. “To me in was kind of blown out of proportion to begin with.”
Out on the far field, the Blaze, a Rockdale’s 12U team, scrimmaged the Caldwell Diamond Runners.
The girls got into game form as they faced off on the field. Each group recited chants to cheer on their team and made some impressive plays including smooth slides at home plate and clean catches to get outs for their team.
During the scrimmages, coaches were in full form as they shared strategies for improvement and motivation with the girls whether a play was made or missed.
Due to the league ruling, the season will be shortened. Rubio says that each league will try to play 8-10 games at minimum depending on the rulings of the Texas Teen-Age Baseball-Softball Association.
