More than 15 years ago, thieves stole Hank Lay-well’s football state championship ring out of his car while he was in Hillsboro.
Laywell, former principal of Thorndale High School and a Milam County resident, was part of the championship team that brought home first state title for Sealy High School in 1978.
“I had given up hope,” He told Houston’s Eyewitness news. “I figured maybe someday, that someone would pawn it off or something at a pawn shop.”
However, earlier this month, Sweeny resident Jennifer Walker was cleaning out her shed when she found a dirty, rusty, mud-covered box.
Inside the box was a Sealy High School 1978 football state championship ring with the name “Hank Laywell” on it.
Assuming it was valuable to someone, Walker searched for Laywell on Facebook and was able to get in contact with Lay-well’s wife Kim. Mrs. Lay-well responded to confirm that it was her husband’s ring.
Laywell received the ring back early on Monday afternoon.
“I think it’s just a sign that there are good people in the world and we were lucky to find one.”
