Play was scheduled to begin Wednesday afternoon in the 39th annual Rockdale Open Tennis Tourney.
The annual mid-summer event is usually one of the warmest sporting events of the year, both for players and spectators.
This year, however, Rockdale Open week started with showers and temperatures about 10-15 degrees below normal for July.
A slight chance of rain remained in the forecast at midweek but highs were expected to climb back near the usual triple digits by week’s end.
The youth portion of the tournament is Wednesday and Thursday and features seven separate categories for players aged 10 through 18, including singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Trophies will be presented to fi rst and second place fi nishers in each event. Two matches are guaranteed for the youth division. Play will begin at 4 p.m. each day.
The adult section of the tournament is Saturday and Sunday with an open division and a tournament division with five different sections and play will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through the evening with (hopefully) cooler temperatures anticipated after dark.
Entry fee is $12 per person, per event and there is a limit of two events per person.
For more information, contact Shelly Sanders (youth) at 760-6100 or Lee Thomason (adult) at 545-2266.
Last year’s winners were:
• 14-under boys singles—Stephen Graham, Thrall.
• 16-under girls singles—Rylee Michna, Taylor.
• Men’s singles—Brian Blanchard, Rock-dale.
• Men’s doubles—Bradley Betak, Thorn-dale, and Noah Santa Cruz, Groesbeck.
• Mixed doubles—Erin Blanchard, Rock-dale, and Noah Santa Cruz, Groesbeck.
• Women’s doubles—Anna Maldonado, Rockdale, and Cori Pool, Round Rock.
Last year’s Rockdale Open “phenom,” Elliott Awomoyi, will be back this year as an eight-year-old.
In 2017, Awomoyi, forced to play in the 14-and-under bracket due to a lack of entries, was runner-up in that older division.
