Like the 2020 post-season, the Blueand-Gold are set to face off with Columbus in the bi-district round of the playoffs. Also like the Tigers, they have a young

Also like the Tigers, they have a young team with just half of their starters returning from their 2020 regional finalist team.

“Going back to last year, I know that they’re big up front on each side of the ball,” said Jacob Campsey, RHS athletic director and head football coach. “The thing you know about them is that they’re very well-coached because their head coach played in the NFL.”

“I knew that they had some really good skill kids coming back from a year ago,” he said. “They didn’t touch the field a whole lot but we saw them on film enough (beforehand) to know that they’re pretty stinking good.”

After this weekend’s film session with the Tiger coaching staff, Campsey said what was on the screen this time helped solidify the initial thoughts he had about the Cardinals.

“I don’t think they’re quite as good as they were,” he said. “I think they had a really good senior class and I think they’re really good again but I don’t think they’re quite as gelled as they were at this time last year.”

“What we knew about them on film was confirmed for the most part,” he said. The Cardinals, led

The Cardinals, led by former Cincinnati Bengals tight end and CHS alum Matt Schoebel, finished play in District 12-3A-I undefeated.

Their most notable win of the season was two weeks earlier over Hallettsville, who Texas Football magazine picked to win the district after they finished 2020 with a loss in Class 3A-I state championship game and all but four of their starters returning from that team.

Schoebel’s squad took down the Brahmas 14-13 after CHS led 14-0 at halftime before Hallettsville made up for lost time with a touchdown in the third and another in the fourth. The Cardinal special team blocked the extra point kick in the fourth quarter, which ultimately decided the outcome and the district champ.

Game time between the Tigers and Columbus, Texas Football magazine’s sixthranked team in Class 3A-I will is Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium.
