Milam County Judge Steve Young has confirmed that former Texas A&M football coach R.C. Slocum will be the first ever keynote speaker at the inaugural Rock-dale-Cameron sportsmanship banquet on Friday, Aug. 9, at the KC Hall.

“We tried to get the banquet organized last year, and R.C. actually committed early since I had been in contact with him back and forth around that time,” Young said. “But this year, he had a family member with health problems and he also had a new e-mail address so he was a bit harder to track down.

“But eventually I sent him more than one text asking if he’d consider being the speaker at the banquet. I received a commitment from him at three o’clock Wednesday morning.”

Slocum led Texas A&M to 11 bowl games from 1989 to 2002 and is the winningest coach in school history with a record of 123-47-2. He is now the interim athletic director at A&M and lives in College Station but also owns a ranch near Gause.

The former Aggie coach does public speaking events all over the country and told Young he doesn’t typically do high school events but because of the uniqueness of the event and his strong support of Milam County that he will attend and speak.

Young said Slocum plans to address the players and the crowd about the importance of sportsmanship and since he’s speaking to fellow rival schools, Slocum will also discuss how he handled the UT-A&M rivarly during his years coaching in College Station.

Wayne Fisher, a Cameron native and Houston lawyer from Fisher, Boyd, Johnson and Huguenard, LLP., will also speak about the importance of economic growth.

With Slocum booked as the speaker, the event will be limited to varsity players, coaches, administrators and parents. The banquet will feature a barbecue meal catered by the Thorn-dale Meat Market that elected officials from both cities will serve. Parents will be charged $15 per plate, but everyone else will eat for free.

Tickets for parents will be made available around Milam County later this month.
