The RHS 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay teams look to face off with area rival Crockett at the Region III Class 3A meet this Friday and Saturday at Midway High School in Waco.

“I’ve looked around and us and Crockett are the top two teams going into the regional meet,” said Lewis Edmonson, Rockdale High School track coach. “It’s just a question of whether we want to win regionals or just get the stick around to make it to state.

Kesean Raven, Cam’Ron Valdez, Will Storey and Qua’Shawn Crawford are members of the 4x100 and 200-meter relay teams, Edmonson referenced.

“I think if we just focus on making it to state we can run the race we know how to run and make all the adjustments we need to make between region and state in order to achieve our main goal,” Edmonson said.

The two teams battled for the first time in the sprint relay at the area meet in Cameron, where Crockett’s Demarcus Richardson kept the lead in the final 20 meters of the race.

The Bulldogs won with a time of 42.6 to Rockdale’s 42.8. THe Tigers suffered their second defeat that day after the Yoemen beat them an hour later in the 4x200 with a time of 1:30.69 to Rockdale’s 1:31.05.

Storey will also compete in the 200-meter dash, a race he posted the second fastest time of 22.24 in Class 3A in his first time running the race at the district meet at home. Xavier Dunlap of Whitewright holds the first fastest time of 22.02.

“For Will, we know he can get out of region just because he’s had the top time of all the guys he’s running against,” Edmonson said. “So he’s competing in his head because we know he can win.

“It’s important for him to get around the curve. In practice, we’ve had him go up against Kesean to get him prepared for going up against some of the quick guys he’ll be facing in Waco,” Edmonson said.

Ty Mayberry will be the Tiger in the field events. The sophomore won the area meet after placing fourth at the district meet six days before, improving his distance from 42’-8” to 46’-10 1/2”.

Mackenzie Musto will represent the Lady Tigers in the 400-meter run. Mus-to placed fourth at the District 19-3A meet on Thursday, April 11, and placed third at the area meet to book her first trip to regionals. She ran the quarter for the first time in March at the Giddings meet, and this weekend at the prelims will be the eighth time she’s ever run the race.
