In the most anticipated and electric race of the Rockdale Relays, the Tigers boys sprint relay team put on a show last Friday at Tiger Stadium.
The team of Cam’Ron Valdez, Kesean Raven, Levi Baggerly and Will Storey almost pulled off a come from behind victory over Cameron’s 2018 state qualifying team of Malik Thomas, Deonte Williams, Zakorian Spikes and Davion Bynaum.
The Tigers were behind until Baggerly covered ground and handed off to the team’s anchor Storey, who outpaced his competition and came close to catching Bynaum, a UTEP commit. The Yoemen won with a 43.25 over Rockdale’s 43.46.
Cameron’s boys squad also won the meet for the fifth time with 85 points. Taylor was second with 70, Georgetown East View was third with 61. Smithville placed fourth with 59 and Rockdale was fifth with 52 points.
“Our guys came out there and competed,” said Lewis Edmonson, Rockdale High School boy’s track coach. “It wasn’t flawless. But that’s a good thing because if we raced flawless today, we wouldn’t have any reason to keep on working. I think we showed Cameron that we’re right there beside them.
Some other RHS highlights include, the Tigers finishing third in the mile relay behind Smithville and Georgetown Gateway with Valdez, Jace Robinson, Quentin Hughes and Storey for a time of 3:40.56.
Layne Rash ran the 110-meter hurdles in 19.39 and a 47.53 in the 300-meter hurdles. Raven and Crawford both ran in 200-meter dash, running a 24-21 and 24.34 respectively.
Robinson ran a 57.01 in the 400-meter dash, while Hughes ran it in 57.68.
In the field events, Ty Mayberry placed fourth in the shot put throwing 40-4 3/4. Jose Rivera competed in the discus, throwing a distance of 108-4 and Levi Baggerly hit 38-9 in the triple jump that day.
LADY TIGERS —
Andrea Salazar was the only member of the Rockdale Lady Tigers track team with experience in a varsity track competition, for the rest of the team the Rockdale Relays was their first one.
“They were a little nervous but stepped up and took care of business. A lot of improvement is being made with these young ladies,” said Brian Thomas, RHS girl’s track coach. “We had a great showing. The girls came out and competed and didn’t give up.”
Freshmen Taytum Young vaulted a 7-6 in her first high school meet and Salazar threw the discus 86-10. Salazar also competed in the shot put with a mark of 28-11 and Destiny Okara-Clarke threw a 25-1 1/4.
On the track, Anna Harmon, Jena Locklin, Kiley Moore and K’Tacia Mayberry began the meet with a 55.86 in the sprint relay. In the 100-meter dash, Mackenzie Musto ran a 14.36 and Mayberry ran a 15.34.
