The Rockdale Tigers lost their season finale 58-52 in Lexington on Tuesday night.
We started off slow,” said Sean Coleman, Rock-dale High School boy’s head basketball coach. “They were able to get a double-digit in the second quarter.”
Lexington led 31-20 at halftime, but the Tigers fought until the end, making a comeback in the second half.
“I think it started to kick in for our seniors that this was their last half of basketball,” Coleman said. “We rallied and came close to beating them.“
The Tigers came within one point of the Eagles, but had missed opportunities toward the end to win the game. Kelan Evans and Zac Davis were the team leaders for Rock-dale.
The Tigers finished play in District 19-3A with a 2-12 record. According to Coleman, his team came up short despite a competitive district.
“To be honest, I am disappointed in how this season went,” Coleman said. “I did not think we were a 2-12 team.
“The way we played at the Buffalo tournament over Christmas break was our best basketball this year. We finished third and we were the only team out of the top seven at that tournament that’s not in the playoffs. That’s what disappoints me the most, knowing where we could be.”
“I learned a lot,” Coleman about his first season as head coach said. “I worked extremely hard and it wasn’t enough. As I move forward, I’ll have to find more ways to get guys to buy in so we can have better results.”
The Tigers will lose Kelan Evans, Zac Davis, Tyler Elliott, Doss Hasselbach, Ryker Zinn, Braden Moore and Mason Monzingo.
Mekhi Crawford, J.J. Moreno and Kobe Mitchell are expected to return for the 2019-2020 season.
Last week, RHS lost to rival Cameron 77-49 at home. Mitchell led the blue-and-gold with 11 and Crawford had 10.
On Tuesday, the Tigers lost to Franklin 56-40 after the Lions went on an 18-2 run in the second. Evans led with 23 and Moreno had six.
