In their first day of the District 19-3A tournament at the Texas A&M Campus Course in College Station, the Rockdale High School boy’s golf team is nine strokes ahead of the Cameron Yoe with an overall score of 347.
Brady Nelson and Ross Loth are tied for first with a score of 79 and Doss Hasselbach has a 91 after the first day of the tourney. Jake Hassellbach shot a 98 and Brayden Burns shot a 99.
The Lady Tigers are in third place with a score of 453 behind McGregor, who has a total of 384, and Cameron, whose team total came out to 401 on the first day.
As of the first day, Whitley Boyd is in fifth place and shot a 99. Gracey Burns shot a 115 and Payton Miller shot a 117. Eve King finished the day with a 122 and Maddy Moody shot a 147 in her first golf tournament of the year.
“The course is in really good shape with all the good weather,” said Ethan Noel, RHS head golf coach. “Both of our teams have competed very well so far.”
King has been the top golfer for the Rockdale girls most of the season and shot a 102 on the Campus Course last season in district but broke her wrist over spring break when her arm was caught between two horse trailers while trying to direct one of the trailers, which was attached to a moving truck, out of a tight spot after riding horses with a family member.
The injury required surgery and made King unable to swing the golf club with both hands and no plans of playing for the rest of the season. But when the golf team was down to three players, King went to the course last week and started practicing with one arm.
King and the rest of the Rockdale golfers will play in the second round of district on Monday at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple.
