It’s win or go home in high school football as the State Playoffs begin. The 6-4 Rockdale Tigers will travel to Conroe to face the 7-2 Columbus Cardinals. The Tigers will be looking for their first playoff win since 2017.

“Columbus is a big and physical team,” RHS Head Coach Jacob Campsey said.

“They have a shifty running back and a lot of a good skill players. It will be one of the best defensive lines we’ve faced all year.”

ROCKDALE—T h e Tigers are looking to bounce back after acquiring their first loss in over a month last week. Despite fighting hard, they were defeated by the Lorena Leopards 49-42 in the 11-3A district championship game.

The offense did not miss a beat earning nearly 400 yard of total offense. The Tigers have scored 42 points or more in their last five games.

The Tiger defense has struggled as they have given up an average of 43 points in their last two games. They will look to return to their October form where they only allowed 21 points per game.

Players to watch: Quarterback Kobe Mitchell had a great outing against Lorena recording 320 total yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Anthony Dansby was a big play waiting to happen last week, snagging four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, sophomore linebacker Cade Pantaleon was a tackling machine against Lorena totaling 16 on the evening.

COLUMBUS—T h e Cardinals are coming into Friday’s contest with great momentum after they defeated the Boling Bulldogs 49-14.

The Cardinals offense has been solid this season averaging 37 points per game. Their 49 points against Boling was their second highest point total of the season.

The Cardinal defense has been sturdy this season allowing only 18 points per game. They have held their opponent to 15 points or less in six of their 10 games.

Players to watch: Running back Kion Hurd has been a problem for every defense the Cardinals have faced this season. Hurd has acquired over 1,000 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Ty Thomas is a dual-threat athlete. He has thrown for over 1,100 yards this year.
