One of six Rockdale High School athletes advanced to the finals in the 92nd Clyde Littlefield University of Texas Relays one of the top track and field meets in the country.
Will Storey ran a 10.89 to place eighth in the 100-meter dash during the invitational tournament. Two Tiger relay teams made up of Cam’Ron Valdez, Kesean Raven, Qua’ Shawn Crawford, Levi Baggerly and Storey ran relays but did not qualify for the fi nals.
The Texas Relays is a massive event at the site of the UIL State Championships, which will be in May. It featured more than 5,000 athletes over four days and blended high school, college and professional athletes all on the same stage.
On Friday afternoon, Storey placed second in his heat of the 100-meter dash with a 10.8, the ninth fastest time in Division I, reserved for high school competitors in classes 1A through 4A and private schools with smaller enrollments. The time earned him a trip to the finals the next day, where he ran a 10.89 and placed eighth.
“That was super huge for Will. These races were the second and third time he’s run in the hundred meter for us this season,” said Lewis Edmonson, Rockdale High School boys track and field coach. “He brought his time down from an 11.1 to a 10.8 this weekend and he’s really been great from just being a leg on the relay team his sophomore year to being the anchor for us in both our relay teams in addition to running this race, so this was huge for him.”
The sprint relay team of Valdez, Raven, Baggerly and Story ran a 43.65 Saturday morning in the preliminaries, placing third in their heat behind Waco La Vega and Ft. Worth’s Nolan Catholic and 17th overall in Division I.
The Tigers didn’t make the finals but they ran the third fastest time of all 3A schools at the meet behind 10th place Daingerfield, 43.36 and rival Cameron, 43.39, who placed 13th.
The Yoe also beat the Tigers in the 4x2 100 meter relay on Friday running 1:30.79 to Rockdale’s 1:31.31. Valdez, Raven, Crawford and Storey placed 12th overall. They ran the fourth fastest time of all 3A schools competing, Daingerfield finished in eighth, Cameron in 10th and Jarrell, in 11th.
“It was also a great experience for those guys just to go to the meet. Will competed last year and Qua’Shawn has watched the relays before, but the other three guys had never seen what the Texas Relays were so that was awesome. It gave them a lot of confidence being on that big stage and performing the way they did,” Edmondson said. “We also got to see a lot of good schools there and got a good feel of where we stood, especially with the computer timing instead of coaches hand timing. Daingerfield’s sprint relay team has had the fastest time in the state so far this season but at this meet, their time was actually only three-tenths of a second faster than ours, so that shows that we’re right up there.”
The Tigers run on Thursday at the Bumblebee Relays in Little River-Academy in their final meet before the District 19-3A track meet on Wednesday, April 10, at Tiger Stadium.
“This will be one more meet to work on technical things,” Edmonson said. “Cameron will also be there and our goal is to beat them in at least one of our relays.
“We want to have that edge on them going into the district meet next week.”
