Crawford, Willard and Casarez earn all-tourney honors

Rockdale baseball had success on their home field this weekend, going 3-0 against Troy, Manor and Holland at the Tigers’ Highway 79 Classic Tournament that they co-hosted with Thorndale.

On Thursday, they opened up tourney play with a 10-2 victory over Class 2A Holland. The Blue-and-Gold was able to build an early lead, scoring two in the second and adding seven more runs in the third.

Mason Willard led RHS with two hits while Kobe Mitchell, Blaydn Barcak and Cruz San Migel had one each.

Mario Casarez led at the mound, throwing all five innings and striking out three.

In their second game on Thursday, the Tigers were able to avenge a 7-2 loss to Troy on Feb. 28. RHS actually led 7-2 for a little bit of the game, but ultimately won, 8-6.

Tra’on Crawford went three-for-three against Troy. Willard, Casarez, Tyler Stewert and Kade Marburger each had hits for the Tigers.

Crawford also pitched five innings for Rockdale, striking out two and allowing five hits.

The Blue-and-Gold also beat Class 5A Manor 15-6 on Friday afternoon. RHS got hot in the third and fourth inning, when they scored 13 of their 15 runs.

As a team, the Tigers had 11 hits. Crawford, Stewert and Willard each had two. Stewert struck out a pair of batters in 2.2 innings and allowed six hits.

Jesus Bocanegra also pitched 2.1 innings and gave up two hits and struck out none.

The Tigers were supposed to face co-host Thorndale later in the day, but the game was canceled due to bad weather.

At the close of the tournament, Crawford, Willard and Casarez were named to the all-tournament team.

THIS WEEK—The Tigers traveled to Florence on Tuesday evening to take on the Buffaloes in their district opener. The Big Blue blasted the herd, beating them 14-2 to kick off district play with a win.

RHS makes their home debut in district on Friday against Academy.

The Bumblebees are coming off a 6-1 loss on Saturday to Cameron, the seventh-ranked team in Class 3A.

The junior varsity game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity will begin around 7.
