After dominating at home with first place finishes last week, the Rock-dale High School golf teams battled the weather in one tournament and faced tough competition in bad weather at the hardest course they’ve played on in the 2019 season in the second tournament last week.
On Tuesday, scattered thunderstorms and light rain forced the cancelation of the Lago Vista Golf Tournament after nine holes of play. Both the boys and girls teams finished in second place behind Lago Vista based on individuals scores to par, according to Ethan Noel, Rockdale High School head golf coach.
Individually the boys scores were: Brady Nelson +5; Ross Loth +4, third place medalist; Brayden Burns +9; Doss Hasselbach +8; Jake Hasselbach +19; Jace Robinson +9, medalist and McKade Casas +22, medalist.
Last Tuesday, the team had another good showing with the Tigers placing third out of 14 teams and the Lady Tigers placing fourth out of seven teams in Round Rock.
“I thought it was a pretty good day for both teams,” said Noel. “Especially with how difficult the course was and on a really windy day. We did a great job of maneuvering the way we needed to and hit good shots.”
Players were hitting against a breezy 10.3 mph wind on the 7,121 yard par 72 Avery Ranch course, which has tighter fairways and more water than golfers had seen all season, according to Noel.
The Tigers hit a combined 349 and were led both by Brady Nelson and Ross Loth who each hit an 85. Sophomore Brayden Burns was right behind them with an 86. Doss Hasselbach hit a 93 and Jake Hasselbach finished seven strokes behind him with a 100.
RHS finished in front of Cameron, who finished 10 strokes behind the Tigers in fourth place. This was the first time the Milam County rivals faced off in the 2019 season after going against each other at district, region and state meets last year.
“Most of the schools at the tournament were 5A and 6A schools,” Noel said. “The only other smaller school there was Cameron.”
Lady Tigers – The Lady Tigers faced off against their Milam County rivals ond behind Lago Vista and Cameron placed behind Rockdale at the tournament that was canceled after the ninth hole because of bad weather.
This was the first time the two Milam County teams faced one another this year.
Individually, the girls scores were: Eve King +22, Whitley Boyd +22, +21 Gracey Burns and +27 Cassidy Smith.
Last Tuesday in Round Rock, RHS was led by a 97 from King. Burns shot a 106 and Payton Miller and Whitley Boyd each had a 108. Cassidy Smith shot 112.
According to Noel, the Rockdale girls were the smallest school there since Cameron’s girls played at the Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop this past weekend.
RHS plays its next tournament at the Bren-ham Country Club. The boys play Monday, Feb. 25 and the girls play Thursday, Feb. 28 in Brenham.
