Five decades of Rockdale High School golf team members were represented in the four-person golf scramble this past weekend. Links-men and women from the 1970s, ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000s and 2010s, coaches and fans gathered at the Rockdale Country Club Golf Course to support the community.

The Eighth Annual RHS Tiger Alumni and Friends Tournament raised $2,500 for the school’s golf program on Saturday, July 28.

This was $100 shy of last year’s funds, which was great according to organizers, considering the Milam County Brown Santa Golf Tournament was held on the same day in Cameron. Brown Santa was founded in 2010 by Sheriff David Greene, who passed away July 20, 2018, and provides toys and books for children of Milam County during the holidays.

“At first, we were worried about our turnout but once we discussed changing the tee time to 9 a.m., instead of 11 a.m., we had golfers, who could support both great tournaments,” said Kathryn Nelson, one of the tournament organizers. “We have also spoken with people at the Cameron Country Club and plan on working together to not have big tournaments on the same days. I believe both of us had a good turnout.”

The earlier tee time allowed golfers to start play in the 80-degree heat rather than the high nineties around noon.

Fourteen Under won the tournament. The team members were: David Akin, Clayton Bland, on the 2003 Tiger golf team, Brent Hasselbach, Sherri Nelson, 1990, Madison Reynolds, 2015, and Scott Skubal, 2011, according to Nelson.

“There was a two-way tie for second place and we had to have a two hole playoff,” she said. “Both teams shot 12 under. The team members that won

Waylon Boyd, left, of the 2010 RHS Tiger Golf team hit a 200-yard shot that landed 10 feet from the pen on the No. 2 hole at the Rockdale Country Club Golf course during the Eighth Annual RHS Tiger Alumni and Friends Tournament. This set up the eagle for Stefan Ruiz of the 1993 Tiger team. John Hogan, from the 1972 team looks on. the playoff for second place were Jeff Miller, Jeff King, David Siers, Eric Towns, and Patsy Jones. “

Patsy Jones played for the Tigers in 1972, King in ‘90 and Towns in 2000. Third place team members were Rodney Barcak, 1987, Billy Galbreath, Brian Graham, Allan Jones, 1972 and Richard Leggett, 1977. A total of 42 golfers and several business and individuals supported the event by sponsoring holes or donating funding.
