Rockdale High School Class of 2017 graduates David Franklin and Adrian Salcedo were crowned men’s doubles champions at the 40th Rockdale Open after defeating Tom Maldonado and David Garcia 10-4 and taking down John Hoelter and Michael Zapata in a tiebreaker 11-10 (7-3) on Saturday afternoon in a three-team round robin tournament.
Zapata and Ben Blanchard, who replaced Hoeltner, defeated Maldonado and Garcia 10-1 the next morning to take second place in the men’s doubles division.
Blanchard, a member of the Howard Payne University team, stepped in after Hoeltner had knee problems.
Zapata also played earlier Sunday morning when he and Taylor High School graduate Michael Weber played for the championship. Weber won the first set 7-5 and took first place with a 6-1 win in the second.
The two were the only singles players.
The women’s doubles also had two entries.
Brenda Threadgill and Suzanne Musick of Victoria defeated Rockdale’s mother-daughter duo Anna and Alethea Maldonado 6-4,6-4.
The mixed doubles was settled on Monday in Victoria after tournament offic ials allowed the four players to play on their home courts. Musick had to leave early and Hoeltner sported a knee injury.
Musick and Hoeltner claimed the mixed doubles championship after beating Threadgill and Garcia 6-4,6-4 late Monday evening.
Garcia and Threadgill defeated Tom and Anna Maldonado 8-0 and only gave up one game in an 8-1 win over Bianca Zapata and Salcedo.
Musick and Hoeltner beat the Maldonados 8-3 and beat Zapata and Salcedo 8-3.
