Last week, RHS announced via Facebook that the school plans to hold a seminar for student-athletes on Monday, Jan. 25, in the RHS auditorium.

RISD athletic director Jacob Campsey has put together the event in order to provide knowledge about the college recruiting experience.

“Basically, we feel like we need to offer an opportunity every winter to get our kids and their parents together to explain to them what the process is like,” said Campsey. “Whether they’re in eight grade, freshmen or so on.”

The event will consist of a presentation that Campsey will give highlighting what colleges are looking for, how to manage social media, the importance of taking college readiness exams and other skills like creating a highlight reel.

Once kids are finished listening to Coach Campsey, the first year coach plans to have RHS defensive coordinator Ryan Montalvo go more in depth due his experience dealing with high school recruits when he coached at Division III Texas Lutheran University.

“Coach Montalvo is really, really in tune with what’s going on.” Campsey said. “He’s spent time at a Division III school and I think that’s a little more what we’re gearing towards, the Division II and Division III schools. Division I recruits kind of take care of themselves and we want our kids to have opportunities to go and play at other places. He’s going to go set up somewhere else (to answer questions) for students and parents.”

The seminar goes for freshmen and sophomore athletes from 6-6:30, and 6:45-7:15 for juniors and seniors.
