Last Tuesday, Rockdale High School observed the memory of super fan Joe Wayne Cleveland at the school’s annual athletic banquet by announcing they were naming their film deck after him.
Cleveland, a 1967 RHS grad who passed away in late March, filmed nearly every Tiger football game for the last 52 seasons.
His wife Sarah and children Kenny, Shellea and Nikki were brought to the podium to see the placard memorial that will be placed on the film deck located next to the press box. The family received a standing ovation from the audience as they exited the podium and returned to their seats.
RHS athletic director Jacob Campsey also announced that beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, Rockdale will give out a Joe Wayne Cleveland Tiger Pride Award. The award will be given to male and female athletes that best exemplify pride in their school and the community.
OTHER HONORS— Jesus Bocanegra and Haven Jimenez were named Tiger and Lady Tiger Athlete of the Year. Irma Hernandez-Catalan and Hagen Land, Jay Bob Rowe Award; Brande Breithaupt and Bruce Mayfield, Dan Yezak Award; Enrique Rivera and Mariana Casarez, The Sportsmanship Award.
