In their season debut, the Tiger junior varsity football team lost 16-0 at Giddings High School last Thursday.

The JV Buffs took the lead early in the game when they scored on an eight-yard touchdown run. Giddings made a two-point conversion was successful following the score.

Rockdale stayed within eight points of Giddings for much of the game until the fourth quarter when GHS scored on a 30-yard touchdown run. They made another two-point conversion after to give them a 16-0 lead.

According to Coach Bart Gibbs, offensive standouts were wide receivers Robert Owens and Amarion Butler and offensive lineman Lane Rickman. Standouts on defense were safety Scott Penny and inside linebacker ZaKori Yanes.

The freshmen team was also shutout by Giddings with a 37-0 loss in their first game.

The Buffaloes got off to fast start within 14 points in the first quarter. They scored on a 10-yard run and recovered a fumble for a 15-yard touchdown later in the first. Both PAT’s were made.

GHS scored nine more points before the end of the half scoring on a five-yard touchdown run missing the PAT. They also made a 34-yard field goal to lead at halftime over the Tigers 23-0.

Giddings scored twice more on a 11-yard TD run in the third quarter and a 10-yard run in the fourth. Both PAT’s were good.

Offensive standouts were running backs Cayden Young and Fernando Valdivia and quarterback Devon Hicks. Defensive standouts were linebackers Deshaun McBride and Chris Huff and defensive lineman Austin Goodman.

Both sub-varsity teams play in Caldwell on Thursday.

The freshmen team plays first at 5p.m., and the junior varsity plays after the conclusion of the opening game at 6:30.

THS runners compete

in Temple Invitational

Eight members of the Thorndale Bulldog and five members of the Lady Bulldog cross country teams competed on Friday morning at Wilson Park in Temple.

For the third straight meet, 2018 regional qualifier Mason Drumm led the boys’ team finishing 12th out of 121 runners in the Class 1A-4A race. Drumm had a time of 18:48.7. Next for THS was freshmen Blake Roberts, who place 65th with a time of 20:56.9. Sophomore Ty Pesl finished 73rd with a time of 21:18.4 and teammate Jason Penick was almost 13 seconds behind him in 75th with a time of 21:31.3.

Other Bulldogs in the top 100 were Garrett Bernstein who finished 86th with a time of 22:34.8 and Ethan Williamson in 96th who ran a 23:33.6.

Chance Betak finished 109th with a 25:15.6 and Dan Bradshaw finished 115th with a 26:48.3.

Freshman Bailee Baker led the Lady ‘Dawgs on Friday placing 74th out of 119 girls in the Class 1A-4A race with a time of 16:17.9. Fellow Lady Bulldog Jacey Paulsen was one second behind Baker in 75th. Tristyn Buchanan finished 89th with a time of 16:44.0 and Makaelyn Vivas placed 103 with a time of 17:27.8. Abby Dickerson finished 105th with a time of 17:31.3.

On Saturday, THS will join Milam County neighbors Rockdale and Milano at the Lexington Invitational.
