The Rockdale Tiger junior varsity’s first game at Tiger Stadium ended in a 26-26 tie to Lago Vista, after the team trailed by two touchdowns at halftime.

This is the Tigers second tie of the season. The first was against Caldwell 22-22 in September.

The Tigers scored once in the first quarter on a short two-yard run by Bryce Gov-an, but weren’t able to stop Lago Vista’s offense.

After a halftime pep talk from Coach David Monroe, the Tigers found new life in the third quarter.

Two long runs in the quarter enabled the Tigers to tie the Vikings.

First was a 70-yard touchdown run by Jose Young. The next touchdown was a 50-yard run by Fernando Gonzales. One of two conversions was successful, which tied the game at 20 going into the fourth quarter.

“The offensive line started making holes for our running backs, and for our quarterback, which allowed our passing game to open up as well.” Monroe said.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers took the lead with help from a long 40-yard pass from Young to Anthony Dansby. The big catch put them in great field position, and led to a four-yard touchdown run by Govan. The two-point conversion failed, putting the Tigers ahead 26-20.

The Vikings made it back to the end zone again, but the Rockdale defense stopped Lago Vista from getting across the goal line on the conversion. The game ended in a tie 26-26.

“We started executing our schemes in the second half,” Monroe said. “This allowed us to be more successful than we’d been.”

Offensive standouts for the Tigers were Young, Govan, Gonzales, Aaron Avila, and Alex Ellison.

Defensive standouts were Albert Silva, Bruce Mayfield, Hagen Land, Yahir Buentello and Keymani Hamilton.

“Our guys get to practice against the varsity during the week,” Monroe said. “That makes for good prep.”

The Tiger JV is now 3-1-2, and play in Rockdale against the Trojans on Thursday.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Troy, but was moved due to the rain making the Troy ISD’s football field difficult to play on.

Four games will be played at Tiger Stadium on Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m.: RJH B, 7A, 8A and junior varsity.
