Rockdale’s Lady Tigers improved to 2-1 in District 19-3A after their defense battled back in the second half to grab a road win over McGregor 39-30.

“It started slow and we had some girls in different places,” said Meredith Caffey, RHS basketball coach. “But we came around and really started to put pressure on them.

“Amahjanae Valdez had 10 points just from putting pressure on their guards.”

In addition to Valdez scoring 10, Anna Harmon also ended the night in double-digits with 14.

“I thought we played well and we also got a chance to try different combinations,” She said. “I think we’re good and set with our girls at where they’re all playing but when it comes to playoff time, you never know who you’re going to have to depend on.

“So it’s good to get those opportunities.”

The Lady Tigers came into the game with the Lady Bulldogs after a string of holiday practices.

“We struggled with having a full squad due to players visiting family out of town,” she said. “It was a small group, but we were really focused on beating McGregor and we did that.”

THIS WEEK–RHS got their tough four-game stretch started, facing 2-1 Academy on Tuesday after press time.

On Friday and Tuesday, they’re on the road against Troy and Rogers, two playoff perennials in the district.

The last game of the stretch is a home game on Friday, Jan. 17, against Franklin, the 16th ranked team in Class 3A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

“We’re focusing on one game at a time,” Caffey, who is in her second year as head coach for the Lady Tigers said. “I know for example with Academy, they beat us last year and we think we have a chance at them this time.

“We know it’s not going to be a game just given to us.”

Rockdale plays next on Friday against Troy.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
