The Rockdale High School cross country team hopes to qualify runners for regionals for the first time since 2011, in Saturday’s UIL District 19-3A cross country meet in Cameron, Monday, Oct. 8.

“We do have kids who should advance to regionals,” Head Coach Cheryl Darby said. “Hopefully, our team will too. We haven’t had kids qualify for regionals in a long time.”

The last Tiger squad to qualify for regionals was the RHS 2011 boys cross country team, according Reporter records. The team placed third in district with Juan Rubio winning first place in district. The top three teams in district go to regionals and the top 10 individuals advance, according to Darby.

Rockdale got a preview of the course during last week’s Cameron Invitational on Sept. 27. Darby said it was a quick and flat course.

The Tigers varsity girls’ team did well in the tournament and had a top ten fi nisher.

Ivanna Luna ran the two-mile race in 13:03.20, which was good for a sixth place finish. Other runners for RHS were: 19. Cady Barcak 13:54.11; 22. Marina Costilla 14:02.07; 34. Tasha San Migel 14:34.15; 53. Jesenia Navarro 15:37.91; 65 and Alize Llanas 16:13.78.

The team placed sixth in the tournament behind its district competition Troy. McGregor won the tournament, Caldwell came in second and Little River Academy placed third.

“We ran against Academy and it looks like they’re going to get second in district,” Darby said. “We’ll be competing for third with Troy. We were behind Troy by six points. Our girls were seconds behind their runners. I don’t know what to expect from Franklin. We haven’t seen them this year, but we’re going to push it and do our best.”

District19-3A includes Cameron Yoe, Franklin, Lexington, Little River Academy, McGregor, Rogers and Troy.

The top finisher for the boys’ varsity team was 21. Isaac Fuentes who ran the three-mile race in 18:28.44. Other finishers were: 50. Albert Silva 20:22.35; 52.AJ Hicks 20:27.61 and 53. Brian Bell 20:30.45.

Despite missing two varsity runners due to personal reasons and sickness Darby said both varsity teams did well.

“The high school is running well,” she said. “We just have a tough district and tough teams within our district.”

She had to cancel evening practice on Monday due to rain.

“Well, right now our times are good. My biggest concern is over killing their legs,” she said. “I want to prevent last minute injuries. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we’re icing down their legs. Our workout consists of distance at the beginning and speed drills at the end of the week.”

Junior varsity results Girls two mile: 13. Zoe Laurence 16:21.30; 19. Vivian Montelongo 17:07.35; and 27. Mercedes Ramirez 18:41.10.

Rockdale Junior High School — The Tigers boys’ team finished fourth in the Cameron Invitational two-mile run despite not having their top runner.

“Joel (Scott) got a concussion in the junior high football game, so he’s out until I don’t know,” Darby said.

“He’s my number one runner. With the times he’s running now, he could win district. I’m not giving up on him. He could knock us to second place in district.”
