Before setting out for the Madisonville Tournament this past weekend, Tiger coach Gilberto Rodriguez was hoping to see growth.
With a slate in pool play that included Brenham, Splendora and Class 6A Bryan, Rodriguez said he felt that his team was in a “tight spot.” However, after two days in Madison County, his team left the tournament with exactly what he was looking for.
Starting off on Thursday, Rockdale fell to Brenham 4-0, a Class 5A program that plays in a tough district with primarily schools from the Houston suburbs. Later in the day, they had the task of taking on Bryan, who shut them out 4-0 as well. Quick improvement became noticeable in their tournament finale, when they lost 1-0 on Friday to Splendora. The Wildcats are an undefeated team that took down Bryan and Brenham while in Madisonville.
“We didn’t make the next round,” Rodriguez said on Facebook, “But I sure am proud of the hard work and skill these boys showed today!” The Tigers also faced Academy on the road earlier in the week, swatting the Bumblebees, 4-0 this past Tuesday.
THIS WEEK— Rockdale returned to the road on Tuesday to take on Jarrell and head to the Hutto Tournament on Thursday and Friday.
The Tigers face Lake Belton (10 a.m.) and Elgin (1:45 p.m.) on Thursday and Austin LBJ (12:30 p.m.) on Friday.
