This weekend, the Rockdale Tiger soccer team is gearing up for their first tournament of the season.
Unlike the last two years where they went over to Cameron to play in the Yoe Tournament, RHS is headed far east to Madisonville this year.
According to head coach Gilberto Rodriguez, his team will face much tougher competition than what they have seen in Cameron during tournament play.
“We got invited to Madisonville after playing them here last season,” he said. “I realized that if we went to Cameron again we would see most of our district. some very good teams coming to their tournament as well.”
The 12-team showcase features 5A and 6A programs such as Bryan, Livingston, Brenham, Montgomery and fellow Montgomery school Lake Creek.
Rockdale has three games scheduled at the tournament with one game on Thursday against Lake Belton at 2:15 p.m.
On Friday, the Tigers face Splendora at 9:15 a.m., and later face Montgomery at 6 p.m.
TUESDAY—In their most recent game, Rockdale lost 12-0 to Bellmead-La Vega at home.
LAST WEEK—Over the weekend, RHS was supposed to play Gatesville at Tiger Stadium. Due to COVID-19 concerns with GISD, the game was canceled.
The Tigers played last a few days before that on Dec. 29, when they traveled to Robinson and lost 6-0 to the Rockets.
DISTRICT—With a lot of new faces, Rockdale is still looking to find their footing by district, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 26, when they host Hearne.
After the tournament, they have three more non-district games with Waco Connally, Florence and Madisonville.
LADY TIGERS— The girls lost 6-0 to Bellmead-La Vega on Tuesday evening.
Although the Lady Pirates were tough on offense, the Lady Tiger defense had a bit of success in the second half, not allowing any goals.
Like the boys, the girls’ Saturday match was also not played.
Their most recent game was an 8-0 loss to Robinson the same day the Tigers competed against them.
