Rockdale track and field athletes had their biggest test of the season thus far when they went to the Buff Relays in Giddings Friday where they competed against Class 5A teams like Bryan Rudder and Bastrop’s Cedar Creek.
Tiger track head coach Lewis Edmonson was pleased how his student athletes performed especially since the relay teams were without Cam’Ron Valdez and Kobe Mitchell.
“If we would’ve been full throttle, those races would’ve been ours,” he said.
RHS placed third in the sprint relay and third as well in the 4x200-meter relay with Kesean Raven, Alec Silva, Anthony Dansby and Tristan Galvan. This was the second time Silva competed for Mitchell, who has quarantined for the last two weeks, while Galvan stepped up in place of Valdez, who cramped up last meet and has been taking precautions ever since.
Sophomore Emma Whitsel placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles but improved her time from a 16.59 to a 16.1.
“She got off to a bad start but she’s getting faster, and that’s great for her,” he said. “She bounced back and that’s going to be big down the line. She is rolling.”
Other top finishers for Rockdale were Isaac Fuentes, who placed second in the mile. Freshman Jesus Bocanegra didn’t compete in Giddings due to having a soccer game in Smithville Friday.
Other top finishers for Rockdale were sophomore Julie Bartsch, who placed third in the shot put and her classmate Taylor Delz who took home a bronze in the 400-meter run. Junior Ivanna Luna placed sixth in the mile.
Gavin Aguilar placed sixth in the shot put the day before competing at the regional powerlifting meet. Rockdale track teams
