Rockdale track and field teams saw a lot of success at the District 19-3A meet in Cameron this past week, where the Tigers finished second overall with 12 area qualifiers and the Lady Tigers placed sixth overall with three athletes moving on to the area meet.
On Wednesday, RHS began the event with a flurry of medalists. Devon Hicks won gold in the pole vault (12-6), Gavin Aguilar earned silver in the shot put (42-1) and Wyatt Windham also took home silver in the high jump (5-10).
Yovanney Delgadillo earned his third silver medal of the year in the 3200-meter run, advancing with a time of 10:33. Fellow Tiger Cristo Hernandez placed sixth, finishing 27 seconds after Delgadillo.
For the Lady Tigers, Wednesday was a battle between teammates T’Niyah Miles and Julie Bartsch in the shot put. Miles won gold in the event (34-10), while Bartsch finished second (32- 5). The two have been each other’s main competition for much of this spring. Bartsch placed second and Miles finished third a week earlier at the Thrall meet.
THURSDAY—On day two of district, Tiger and Lady Tiger athletes had even more positives.
Tim Grice earned three gold medals over the course of the evening, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.67, while teammate Tristan Galvan earned bronze with a 23.98. Galvan and Grice joined forces with Alec Silva and Robert Owens to win the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:32.14, beating Caldwell by two-hundredths of a second. A similar story happened earlier in the evening during the sprint relay. Grice, Owens, Silva and Kobe Mitchell won the race over Caldwell with a time of 43.57, beating the Hornets by two-tenths of a second to punch their ticket to area.
Other Blue-and-Gold qualifiers were Gerren Marrero, whose time of 17.44 helped him earn a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles. Marrero placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
RHS also had multiple student athletes qualify at the tail end of the meet. In the mile, Del-gadillo picked up his second silver medal in 36 hours and fourth of the season with a time of 4:42.89 and Jesus Bocanegra placed fourth with a time of 4:48.85. Bocanegra also earned a bronze medal not too long after in the mile relay with Silva, Galvan and Erik Sheppard. The quartet had a time of 3:41.62. Ivanna Luna-Hernandez returned to area with a 6:12.86 and a fourth place finish.
AREA—Rockdale’s area qualifiers have this week off from competition but return to track on Thursday, April 21, at Tiger the Stadium.
