I n Thursday soccer action, the Tigers outplayed Jarrell, a strong, playoff contender from District 2:-4A, defeating the Cougars 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick by German Mata past the JHS goalie late in the first half.
For the rest of the tournament, Rockdale struggled with games that ended in ties on Friday against Marlin and Rice Consolidated and ending the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Academy on S aturday.
“I t went okay, I was expecting a little bit more,” said RHS boys coach Gilberto Rodriguez. “I t seemed like we were a little out of it, although we were great effort-wise in the Rice game.
“But we’re just not connecting and not talking out on the field.”
Rodriguez also noted that Rockdale’s side of the bracket was very tough playing in the Cameron tournament.
I n addition to Big Blue’s struggles, they are also dealing with the reality of possibly not having leading scorer Chris Olvera for the remainder of the season.
Olvera broke his collarbone against Giddings the week before.
W ith him gone, the Tigers are looking to find a new identity, which they are in a hurry to find before their district opener on Tuesday, Jan. 28 , in Austin against the Achieve Academy.
Achieve and S outh Austin’s I DEA Montopolis are the two new schools that the U I L added to District 26-4 A for the 2020 season.
The two Travis County schools add to the mix of intense competition in the district that Rockdale was the fourth place team out of in 2019.
LASTWEEK–Two days before starting the Cameron tourney, Rock-dale defeated Florence at Tiger S tadium, 3-0.
Hagen Land, Fernando Luna and Christopher Huff each scored.
TH IS W E E K – Rock-dale had a rematch with Jarrell on Tuesday night at home after press time.
RHS also plays at home on Friday when they host Madisonville.
The Mustangs are 4 -6-2 this year, but are coming off a mini-playoff run in 2019 where they took down La Vega before losing in the second round.
The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
LADY TIGERS–The girls were off Friday, but tied Florence 0-0 three days prior.
“W e played super hard and have improved a lot,” said RHS girls coach Kaitlyn Brinkley. “I ’m super proud of them and the effort they are putting in.”
Defensive standouts were Yarely Navarro, I rma Catalan and Ana Pacheco. Top offensive players according to Brinkley were Alize Llanas, Jasmin Cervantes and Vanessa Gonzalez-Reyes.
THIS WEEK–Rock-dale played host to Jarrell after press time Tuesday and travel to Mexia Friday.
