The seventh grade ‘A’ team had a dominant weekend at the Thorndale Tournament with a first place finish. The eighth grade ‘A’ also made it to the championship game by placing second.
In Thorndale, the seventh grade squad blasted Granger 74-3. RJH shutout the Lions for three straight quarters before they scored.
Three players for the Tigers had double-digit scoring. Wyatt Windham and Mason Willard both had 18 points, and Blaydn Barcak had 14. Every other player on the Tigers roster had at least four points including Samraj Gill, Kemar Spencer, Dominique Clark and Isaiah Sauls. Gerren Marrero also had eight points.
Caldwell didn’t pose much more of a threat for the Tigers, defeating the Hornets 40-13 in the championship game. The Tigers led 22-6 at the half and outscored their Burleson County neighbors 18-4 in the second half for the win. RJH was led by Windham and Willard’s scoring, with 17 and 10 points respectively. Marrero and Spencer were also key scorers for Rockdale, with seven and six points each.
In non-tournament play, the seventh grade ‘A’ team also defeated Troy 24-22 for their third win of the season. Windham led Rockdale with 14 points.
Last Thursday, the Tigers lost to Cameron 32-22 in their first game of the season. Rockdale was unable to make up 13 point run the Yoemen went on in the second and third quarters. Windham led the Tigers with five points. Marrero, Spencer and Willard all had four points in their first ever junior high basketball game.
8A – In their second place finish the elder Tigers began the day with a 33-32 win over the Granger Lions. Braden Thomas led the Tigers with 16 points.
The Tigers fell 27-15 to the class 4A Caldwell Hornets in the finals. Caldwell led 12-11 at halftime and outscored RJH 15-4 in the second half to win and take the first place trophy back to Burleson County. Thomas scored double-digits for the second time that afternoon with 11 points.
In non-tournament play on Monday, the Tigers lost 30-23 to Troy. Robert Owens was Rockdale’s leading scorer with 13 points.
The team also lost to Cameron 41-16 last Thursday. After the Yoe led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter, they added to their lead with a 16-point run to lead 28-5 at the half. The Tigers outscored Cameron 14-11 in the second half, but the Yoe built up enough equity earlier in the contest to win the game. Chris Miles led Rockdale with nine points. Thomas and Cayden Silvey also scored with four and three points, respectively.
8B – The Tigers lost their first game of the season 23-14 to Troy. Miguel Reyes led the squad with nine points.
Earlier in the week, the team defeated the Cameron Yoemen 15-10. Both teams went into halftime 6-6, but the Tigers took control of the last two quarters to win 15-10. Reyes was the scoring leader once again with seven points.
7B – RJH beat the Troy Trojans 18-7 to remain undefeated on the season. Jesus Bocanegra led the Tigers with eight points.
Earlier in the week, the boys defeated Cameron 21-20 in their first junior high basketball game. Mario Casarez scored 13 points in his middle school debut.
The boys play in the Cameron Tournament on Saturday. Game times were not determined as of press time.
All basketball teams face Rogers on Monday. The boys will be at RJH gymnasium with tipoff for seventh grade games at 5 p.m.
