Last year’s seventh grade Rockdale Junior High School Volleyball Tournament winners took the crown again as eighth graders on Saturday at RJH gym. The Lady Tigers faced the Gateway Lady Buffalos in the championship game of the tournament.

“The Buffs put our Tiger defense to the test in set one, but blocks put up by Alyzza Varela and Alanah Ford secured the win in set one,” said Coach Regan Fritsche.

“Set two started strong with tough serving by Yolianna Castillo and strong passing by Kina Montelongo. however, it was the powerful hitting by Julie Bartsch and Saige Robertson that gave the Lady Tigers the momentum needed to snag a first place finish 25-20, 25-9.”

Game two against Lexington was a nail biter from start to finish, according to Fritsche.

“Julie Bartsch’s offense at the net, Emma Whitsel’s defense in the back row, and Yolianna Castillo’s serving and setting allowed the Lady Tigers to take the lead in each set,” she said.

The Eages won 25-23,25-23 to advancing to the championship round.

In the first game of tournament play, Makaila Jackson’s tough serves and Reagan Eanes strong defense helped them to quickly advance to round two, beating the Lady Buffaloes 25-8, 25-13.

Seventh grade – The 7A RJH team lost momentum midway through the championship game and fell to Rogers to take second place in their tournament.

“The Lady Tigers started strong in set one against Rogers with tough serves and spikes by Hailey Webb,” Fritsche said. “In set two, the Lady Tigers lost their momentum midway, allowing Rogers to capitalize on errors and secure a third set. In set three, both teams battled hard for first place, but the Lady Tigers were unable to find their rhythm and lost set 3, 10-15, giving them a second place finish overall.”

Strong net defense against Thrall by Ciara Miles and tough serves by Halle Jimenez propelled the Lady Tigers to the championship match.
