Seven teams will be competing in this year’s Rockdale Softball Invitational Tournament at Rock-dale High School. The Lady Tigers varsity takes the field 9:30 a.m. Friday and the junior varsity squad will play 9:30 a.m. today.
Entry fees for tournament are $2 for students and $4 for adults.
“We will see a lot of schools that are larger than us and have a true established pitcher,” said Coach Meghann Infantino. “It will be a challenge for us to take care of business on both sides of the game.”
The pool play tournament will pit the Lady Tigers against Lago Vista, Jarrell and Manor high schools. The junior varsity team will take on Florence, Holland and Manor New Tech.
“This year we will have an exceptional offense. We will out-hit or at least keep up with many other teams,” Infantino said. “We are struggling defensively with pitching and errors. I am working with two junior varsity ready pitchers.
RHS returns eight varsity players and six will be starting. They will be led by catcher Payton Miller, a senior.
“She is a vocal leader for the team,” Infantino said. “Haven Jimenez is my sophomore starting third baseman. She is a leader by example. She outworks every other student-athlete.”
For this weekend’s invitational Infantino’s focus is on individual innings.
“Our goal is to win each inning, no matter how many points the other team puts up. I would also like to see the girls cut down on defensive errors,” she said.
LAST WEEK – Despite out-hitting Caldwell 9 to 8, Rockdale lost 13-6 in a high-scoring scrimmage to Caldwell last Friday.
“The Lady Tigers fell victim to six errors,” according to Coach Meghann Wrinkle.
Mariana Casarez went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits, McKenzie Musto, Emily Depine, Ryleigh Eanes, Andrea Salazar, Jena Locklin and Avery Hobbs had one hit each.
Brande Breithaupt took the loss and lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and seven runs. She struck out two.
