On Thursday evening, Rockdale High School's junior varsity football team got off to a slow start in their season opener at home with Class 4A La Grange but stayed with the Leopards in what was eventually a 34-28 loss.

In the first, LHS scored two unanswered touchdowns on passes and led at the close of the quarter, 12-0. Both point-after-touchdown (PAT) attempts by La Grange were unsuccessful.

Although the Leopards scored early in the second with another missed PAT to make the game 18-0, RHS bounced back with a 20-yard TD pass from Mason Willard to Devon Hicks. An Ace Taylor two-point conversion run made it 18-8.

The Tigers didn't produce any more points in the first half but ended it on a high note when they recovered a kickoff to get the ball at the La Grange 17-yard line.

Late in the third, an Ezekiel Castro goal line TD helped the Blue-and-Gold inch closer to gaining the lead.

However, La Grange's offense came back to life in the fourth when LHS extended their lead to 26-14, scoring on a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion. RHS freshman Timothy Grice brought the Tigers back within six thanks to a 67-yard run. The PAT after was unsuccessful. The Leopards answered back with a kickoff return followed by a completed two-point conversion.

Grice scored again on a Willard pass with a successful two-point conversion, but it wasn't enough for RHS to win their season opener.

According to Rockdale coach Bart Gibbs, offensive standouts were Grice, Willard, Hicks, Miles Grear and Jonathon Morgan. Standouts on defense were defensive ends Colton Wallace and Mason Meschwitz. Safety Saint Medrano was also named a defensive standout.

THIS WEEK—Rockdale's junior varsity is at home once again this week when they host Taylor. Similar to last week, the Blue-and-Gold will only have one junior varsity game which will start at 6:30 p.m.
