The JV Tiger defense took advantage of the Cougars and built a 20-0 lead in the first half of Thursday’s game that Jarrell never recovered. Rockdale defeated the Jarrell Cougars 34-12.

“Our kids played hard and made plays on both sides of the ball,” said Coach David Monroe. “We forced three turnovers which gave us a whole lot of momentum.”

The visiting Rockdale Tigers got off to a fast start when Fernando Gonzalez intercepted a pass that he returned for a 60-yard touchdown. The Tigers made the two-point conversion to go up 8-0. Later in the first quarter, Anthony Dansby made an interception that led to a 45-yard touchdown run by Bryce Govan. The two-point conversion was no good, but Rockdale ended the quarter 14-0.

Alden Bangert made a 15-yard sack to help the blue and gold get the ball back in the second quarter. Chris Vargas put Rockdale up 20-0 with an eight-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed.

Vargas and Govan both scored their second touchdown of the game with a three-yard and 10-yard run in the third quarter. The Tigers were able to make the two-point conversion after Govan’s run to put them up 34-0.

Jarrell scored once in each quarter of the second half, but were never able to catch up to Rockdale.

“We gave a great effort,” Monroe said. “It was a great team win for us.”

Defensive standouts for the Tigers were Gonzales, Dansby, Bangert, Christian Briggs, and Keymani Hamilton. Offensive standouts were Govan, Vargas, Alex Ellison, Jake Hasselbach, and Tucker Prestridge.

The Tigers play in their final game of the 2018 season 6 p.m., Thursday evening at Tiger Stadium against Little River-Academy Bumblebees.

“The kids from Academy always play hard, and do what they’re coached to do.” Monroe said. “It’s always been a good game between
