After a loss to Lexington the week before, Rockdale’s junior varsity football team bounced back, taking down West, 36-8.
The Tigers took the lead when quarterback Brody Willard found Bryson Weaver open for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Willard put his team up 8-0 in the first quarter after scoring on the two-point conversion run.
RHS hit their stride in the second with three more touchdowns. Willard scored first on an eightyard sprint in large part to Radyn Hamilton, who had multiple “big runs” on an eight-play drive, according to coach David Monroe. Once again, Willard ran in the two-point conversion.
On the next series, Rockdale blocked a punt that was picked up by Layton Mogford, who scored. This put Rockdale up 22-0.
Before the close of the second, Willard and Weaver connected on a 40-yard pass that brought the Tigers to the red zone. This led to Willard finding Alex Cooper open for a 20-yard TD pass. Wilmer Sorto made the extra point, giving RHS a 29-0 lead going into halftime.
The Blue-and-Gold scored once more in the third on a five-yard run by Juan Salcedo. Sorto made the extra point once again, putting Rockdale up by what was ultimately the final score, 36-8.
Standouts on offense were Weaver, Cooper, Willard, Salcedo and members of the offensive line David Penny, D’Anthony Lockett, Stephen Goodrich, Ellis Suits, Edwin Saldana, Graham Gay, Zach Karl, Jeremiah Fernandez and Daniel Luna.
Defensive standouts picked by Rockdale JV coaches were Mogford, Sorto, Landon Deason and Klay Eschberger.
THIS WEEK— Similar to the varsity squad, the Tigers have this week off and return to action on Thursday, Sept. 29, when they head to Franklin to face the Lions.
Kick-off between the two schools is at 6 p.m.
RJH— A ll Rockda le Junior High football team lost this past week in Madisonville, with the combined seventh and eighth grade “B” teams losing, 20-6.
Zailenn Arvizu scored the Tigers only touchdown on an 80-yard run.
The seventh grade “A” team lost 30-0 and the eighth grade “A” team lost 36-0.
THIS WEEK— B ot h RJH “A” teams return to action on this upcoming Thursday in Navasota.
