Flowers, Perry break school records in Belton ISD Meet
With 58 kids going out for powerlifting this season, Rockdale High School coach Ryan Montalvo was tasked with making sure all his lifters got a chance to lift every week.
Since schools are only allowed to have 12 boys and 12 girls compete at each meet, there are many weeks that Montalvo and fellow coaches David Monroe, Hudson Evans and Mackenzie Musto will have to travel to multiple meets per week. Essentially, Rockdale has so many competitors that they now have a junior varsity as well as a varsity powerlifting team.
Many RHS lif ters started their season on Friday at the Belton ISD Invitational. Bryce Flowers left the meet with a gold medal after winning the 181-pound division while also breaking the RHS squat record for his weight class.
Other Tiger top performers at the Bell County Expo Center were Daniel Gardiner, who placed third in the 242-pound division and Kevin Liu, who also finished third but in the 148-pound class. Tristan Rupe also placed fifth in the 220.
For the Lady Tigers, sophomore Elizabeth Perry placed third and shattered school records in the squat, bench press, dead lift and combined total for her div ision. Caressa San Miguel was also a top performer in Belton, grabbing fifth place in her class.
Among st t he l i f ters that traveled to Giddings on Saturday, Austin Caldwell placed fourth in the 123-pound weight class. The lifters that traveled to Lee County went up against other varsity teams.
THIS WEEK— The Rockdale Invitational takes place this Saturday in the RHS Gymnasium. Fellow schools coming to the meet are Academy, Caldwell, Giddings, Hearne, Hutto, Jarrell, La Grange, Milano, Bryan-Rudder, Thorndale, Troy, and Cameron Yoe.
