Before heading to Greensboro, N.C. for the Junior Olympics, Rock-dale’s Canaan Miles took sixth place in the 400-meter run at the Summer Games of Texas in College Station.
“Canaan ran his second fastest time,” said Charles Miles coach and parent of 100 Miles and Running. “Texas also has a lot of competition in track and field and the majority of the meet was Dallas area teams.
“So the sixth fastest in the state is awesome for us coming from little old Rockdale.”
Miles finished second in his heat and was among the top eight runners to make the finals. He ran a 1:15.77 in the pre-lims and a 1:15.12 in the finals.
The eight-year old also placed 31st overall in the 200-meter dash with a 35.61 and 39th in the 100-meter dash clocking at 17.29.
His older brother Jaylen placed 17th overall with a 2:49.70 in the 800-meter run, 20th in the 400 with a 1:11.82 and 25th in the 200 with a 30.93.
“Jaylen has beat himself up about not medaling,” Charles said. “But I had to remind him that he’s nine running with 10 year olds and has another year in this age division.”
T’Niyah Miles also represented Rockdale at the games throwing the discus and the shot put.
She finished 26th in the shot with a distance of 24-04.50 and 24th out in the discus with a throw of 60.70.
“The shot put was her best throw this summer,” Charles said. “This was her first time doing track so I’m very proud of making it this far and steadily improving.
“She’s had a lot of faith in herself and never gave up.”
