RHS senior Qua’Shawn Crawford signed with Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) last Sunday.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and it’s close to home,” Crawford said about the school in Waxahachie. “I had a great talk with Coach (Jason) Covarrubias so in the fall, it’s going to be a movie.”

He said his family and his coaches were major influences in his life.

“My family and I didn’t have a lot, so all I know is the grind and hard work,” Crawford said. “I do this for my mom because I know she needs me to make it. I do this for my dad, too, because he pushes me to be the best. I do it for my broth ers, sisters, Coach (Lewis) Edmons o n a n d anyone who looks up to me.”

Crawford competed in the 4x200M relay and 200M sprint for the Tigers this season. Last year’s 4x100M relay team that he was a part of finished sixth in state with a time of 42.79.

This year the 4x100M relay team, Crawford’s favorite event, held the second best time in the state before the COVID-19 shutdown.

“I feel like my best event is the 4x100 just knowing that I am competing with guys that I trust, and they trust me to do my job also,” Crawford said. “I know when I do my job at its best it’s just a really good feeling, especially when we win or get a PR (Personal Record).”

Crawford says his confidence and his work ethic are his best qualities.

“I have confidence in myself and in my teammates,” Crawford said. “I like to compete and push myself to the limit, so my opponents know I mean business. But it’s all respect at the end of the day.”

Rockdale Athletic Director Jacob Campsey praised Crawford.

“He’s a great leader and he’s extremely committed. “He’s always pushing himself and he wants his teammates to be great .”

He is the first RHS athlete to sign with SAGU’s track and field program, according to RHS officials.

SAGU made the announcement via tweet on Sunday, “We are excited to officially welcome Qua’Shawn Crawford (sprinter from Rockdale HS) to the #SAGUXCTFFAMILY!!! Let’s go to work!”
