The Rockdale Tigers had their first scrimmage last Friday night here at Tiger Stadium.
A scrimmage is a glorifi ed practice against another team, in this case it was the Rogers Eagles that brought their triple option to Tigerland to see if the Blue & Gold could hang tough and the Tigers, as athletic director and head football coach Hunter Hamrick put it, “Did good.”
You don’t really keep score at a scrimmage but the Tigers outscored the Eagles 4-3.
“We did better than I thought we would do. We were not great, but Rogers was not great either,” Coach Hamrick said. “The triple option puts your defense in a bind because the offense does not really have to block and that neutralizes our guys and then the secondary has to step up. They kept us off balance.”
The Tigers offense controlled the line of scrimmage. The running game looked solid. Rockdale has four running backs, sophomore Jeramiah Butler was “explosive,” seniors Zeke Castro, Darren Carter and Radyn Hamilton were all workhorses.
The Tigers expect Wilmer Sorto back in practice this week and plan on using him in the future as a blocking back, something they don’t really have right now.
After losing three-year starter Blaydn Barcak to graduation, the Tigers are working on their quarterback situation. Greyson Williams is continuing to improve on his drop back passing skills. No doubt this baller will get better and will be an asset to the Tigers.
THIS WEEK—
Thursday the Tigers travel to Salado to face a team with big numbers so there will be a challenge for Rockdale.
Coach Hamrick said, “It will be a tough one.
Our varsity will match up well. We a re not getting to do as much strength conditioning as we would like so cramps, fresh legs are concerns.”
“This is the first team we have traded film with so there will not be any surprises for us or them,” he added.
This will be the Tigers’ final scrimmage before the start of the regular season.
The JV begins at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7.
