SEGUIN—Texas Lutheran center fielder and former Thorndale star Riley Schaefer has been recognized as a 2018 National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American Athlete of the Year.

Nominated by TLU head baseball Coach Greg Burnett, Schaefer received the honor for his “determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence.”

The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning.

Athletes are also recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes.

There are 500 NSCA All-American Athletes of the Year for the 2017-18 academic year and over 230 schools are represented on the awards list.

A 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior, Schaefer was one of 40 baseball student-athletes to earn the NSCA All-American recognition.

He is TLU baseball’s second NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year.

Schaefer, a four-year starter, is working on his bachelor and master’s degrees in accountancy.

He has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for seven semesters.

He was named a Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017.

Schaefer has earned two SCAC Hitter of the Week honors this season, and he currently leads all of NCAA Division III in total hits, with 56.

Schaefer also leads 26-8 and No. 11 ranked TLU in batting average (.438) and runs scored (38).

He is second on the team in stolen bases, with 14, and he is second on the squad in RBI, with 25.

Schaefer has doubled nine times, tripled twice, and has a career-high five home runs.

Schaefer, a 2014 Thorn-dale graduate, was a three-sport standout for the Bulldogs.

He was an all-state selection at quarterback and defensive back in football and was also all-state in baseball.

Schaefer was also the valedictorian of his graduating class.
