Rebuilding is the theme for the 2018 Rockdale High School cross country team this season. This year’s distance runners will be hitting the streets of Rock-dale, so honk when you see them practicing on Bush-dale Road early mornings and evenings starting Monday, Aug. 6.
Coach Cheryl Darby, in her second year at the helm, says some of her top runners like Tasha San Miguel and Alberto Torres, both seniors, and Jesenia Navarro and Isaac Fuentes, both sophomores, are going to get a lot of help from the incoming freshman class. RHS is gaining at least four runners from last year’s junior high team that took second place in the University Interscholastic League State Cross Country championships last year — Cady Barcak, Andrew Hicks, Alize Llanas and Ivana Luna.
“We have grown leaps and bounds from my first year here,” Darby said. “Our biggest thing is growth. We had 17 total come out for cross country this year.”
Fuentes just missed going to state in last year’s high school regional meet, according to Darby. He came in 17th place and they take the top ten to state.
