RHS senior Davioun Scott becomes a Cardinal

At Tiger Gymnasium in front of his peers, teachers, coaches and family this past Wednesday afternoon, RHS senior Davioun “Dae-Dae” Scott signed his letter of intent to play football at Trinity Valley Community College.

His decision to sign comes after visiting the Athens campus last month, where Scott and Tiger coaches left with the idea that he found his new home.

“It was really kind of quick,” said RHS football coach Jacob Campsey. “It was a good fit, he made a visit and I think it clicked. And I think they made it well-known that they want him to have an impact immediately.”

Transferring to Rockdale from Cameron in the spring semester of 2020, Scott had an immediate impact on the Tiger program that fall, playing on both sides of the ball. The former Yoemen brought his hard-nosed style of play across the Little River with him.

“I’m always striving for greatness,” Scott said of his approach to football. “It’s always better ahead. You just have to keep going.”

Scott’s father Cederic Mitchell said he felt his son had a chance to play collegiately just by seeing the aggression he showed on the field when he was younger.

“I’ve been telling him during the last couple of seasons that if he keeps hitting like that, he might hit his way into someone’s school,” Mitchell said.

Scott’s impression was particularly felt this past season, when he racked up 699 total yards on offense and 103 tackles on defense. He also provided multiple years of varsity experience on a team primarily made up of younger players.

“I think if you don’t have that guy, then you’re having to find your way feeling around in the dark,” Campsey said. “What he was able to offer us was ‘been there, done that’.”

“He did everything 115 percent. So with that alone, people see him and they’re automatically going to fall in line,” he added.

The staff at TVCC want him to play on defense as a nickelback, which is a defensive back that plays in place of the weak side linebackers.

The Tiger senior gave credit to coach Ryan Montalvo, who he said “put me on the map” with college coaches.

He found it hard to describe what he was feeling on signing day.

“It feels good knowing what my next step is going to be,” Scott said.

In addition to playing football, Scott is a skilled handyman, according to his aunt Sharee Mitchell.

“He likes welding and building things,” she said. “Like a doghouse or a fence, he’ll build it. He took a welding class (in Rockdale) and he really enjoyed doing that.”
