Six Rockdale athletes earned the opportunity to compete at the Region III track meet at Panther Stadium in Waco on April 26-27, after placing in the top four of their respective events at the area meet in Cameron Tuesday.
The Tiger sprint relay team of Cam’Ron Valdez, Kesean Raven, Will Storey and Qua’Shawn Crawford faced off against the Crockett team, that had the fastest time in class 3A.
Both teams battled back and forth for the lead in the first three legs of the race. n the final leg of the race, Raven took turns leading with Demarcus Richardson of Crockett, before the Richardson edged past him in the final 20 meters for the victory.
The Tigers ran their second fastest time of the season of 42.8 right behind the Bulldogs time of 42.6.
The same groups faced each other in the 4x200-meter relay with CHS winning with a time 1:30.69 to the blue-and-gold’s 1:31.05.
“We won’t be able to see the results from other area meets until later on but I think both of our schools might be the two fastest in the region in both events,” said Lewis Edmonson, RHS track coach. “We’ll work on some things in the mean time.
“Of all the relay teams I’ve coached, this group has the best chemistry. When they’re not working at it, they’re always having a good time and it makes everything easier when you can get a group like that,” he said.
Storey also qualified in the 200-meter dash after finishing third with a time of 22.94. Storey ran three events in the meet.
Ty Mayberry also qualified for the Tigers winning the shot put with a throw of 46-10. Mayberry won after placing fourth at the district meet six days prior.
Sophomore Mackenzie Musto’s third place finish and time of 62.0 in 400-meter dash qualified her for the regional meet.
Musto made it to area after running a time of 63.95 and placing fourth in the district meet.
Other competitors from RHS were Andrea Salazar who threw a 88-0 in the discus and Albert Silva who placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a 2:13 after placing third at district. The mile relay teams of Quentin Hughes, Jace Robinson, Levi Baggerly and Silva also placed seventh with a time of 3:39.
ROCKDALE — Last Wednesday and Thursday, the RHS track teams hosted district at the new Tiger Stadium. The sprint relay and four-by-two squad took down the Cameron Yoemen who were later disqualified after it was discovered that one of their athletes had competed in too many events.
In the 100-meter dash, Baggerly placed seventh in the finals with a time of 11.60 and Crawford ran the 200 in 23.13 placing fifth and missing out on the top four.
For the Lady Tigers, the four-by-two relay team of Jena Locklin, Hannah Delz, Jesenia Navarro and Kiley Moore placed sixth with a time of 1:59.10 and Salazar placed fourth with a throw of 100-7.
Freshmen Ivanna Luna Hernandez missed the area meet by seconds placing fifth in the mile with a personal best time of 5:55.
