Soccer play has begun at RHS as the boys and girls played their first scrimmage on Friday. Both team’s faced the Academy Bumblebees as a benchmark to prepare for regular season play.

BOYS—The Tigers looked sharp as they tied the Academy Bumblebees 2-2. Academy scored their two goals on a goalie error and a corner kick in the second quarter. Going into the final quarter, the Tigers rallied back. Uriel Flores scored both goals for the Tigers to even the score. The game went to penalty kicks to decide a winner. The Tigers scored on eight of their 10 attempts with Chris Huff, Flores, Hagen Land, Marvin Mata, Daniel Romero, Jorge Salazar, Tyler Thomas and Enrique Rivera all making their kicks.

“To be honest, I feel like they exceeded my expectations,” RHS Head Coach Gilberto Rodriguez said. “Obviously, I don’t mean that in a wrong way. But when you only have two starters returning, I expected us to struggle but play hard. Their performance blew me away. I felt like they did a magnificent job.”

The Tigers will play the RHS Alumni in a scrim mage on Friday.

GIRLS—The Lady Tigers fought hard but fell to the Academy Lady Bumblebees 4-0. Despite being down, the girls continued to attack the Bumblebees throughout the game. Standout players from game included Irma Hernandez-Catalan and Marissa Hernandez.

RHS Head Soccer Coach Shirley Lozano said her team put on a great performance but there is a lot of room for improvement.

“Overall, I feel like we played well” Lozano said.

“We need to improve on talking to our teammates and staying in position.

On Tuesday, the girls faced off against the Navasota Lady Rattles in a scrimmage. The Lady Tigers showed improvement, but were defeated 2-0. Throughout the game girls made some impressive passes and played solid defense.

“They performed well but we just need better communication,” Lozano said. “Overall, I am happy with how the game went.”

The Lady Tigers will play their final scrimmage against the Lampasas Lady Badgers on Friday in Lampasas.
