After months of lost sport seasons, kids in Rockdale will get a chance at having the fun summer they wanted.

On March 20, Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that childcare facilities, summer camps and sports leagues could reopen.

The next day the directors of the Texas Teenage Baseball-Softball Association (TTA) decided to move forward with their seasons.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the status of the league was uncertain until they reached an agreement last Thursday.

The Rockdale Girls Softball League is preparing to start its season.

RGSL president Pete Rubio said he is thrilled with the ruling but will take things one step at a time.

“We’re basically going to follow their (TTA) lead,” Rubio said. We have some ideas of how we want to do things but of course the TTA will have the final say.”

Full team practices will start on May 31 and the RGSL will try to start the games by June 15.

Due to low enrollment numbers this year, the T-Ball and 10U (10 and Under) leagues will be omitted.

Rubio said the RGSL will re-open league sign-ups for the 8U, 12U and 15U leagues. The deadline to sign up will be May 31. For the moment, Rubio said each league will have three teams. This number could expand depending on enrollment numbers.

Season end dates will be adjusted.

RYBA–Youth baseball was canceled for the season in April, after the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association board surveyed parents about keeping the season going or canceling.

“Please bear with us, and understand this decision did not come lightly, and our board is saddened we have to do this,” wrote Bobby Joe Tindle, RYBA board president.

The league is planning a Sandlot fun day for the players at a later date.
