8U division canceled due to low numbers

After the Rockdale Girls Softball League (RGSL) faced the possibility of no season in April and May, they hit another bump in the road this week. The league has postponed 15 and 12 and under division games due to an undisclosed athlete testing positive for the COVID-19 virus.

RGSL President Pete Rubio said he started receiving calls about the COVID-19 case on Sunday and had to make a quick decision.

“We were planning to start games on Monday, so it was a hard decision to make,” Rubio said. “Fortunately, we’re able to postpone things and keep all the girls safe instead of running the risk of acquiring more cases.”

The 15 and under division will be postponed for two weeks while the 12 and under division will be postponed for one week.

“We got more calls about the 15U league than the 12U league, so we decided to make their postponement longer,” Rubio said.

The RGSL still has plans to play 10 games this season.

Unrelated to the latest case, the 8U division will discontinue for this season because many kids withdrew from the league due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rubio said. The low participation led to the eventual cancellation of play this summer.

“It’s very unfortunate,” Rubio said. “The parents wanted to continue but the amount of withdrawals basically kills it for the rest of the girls.”

The RGSL says they will set up a day for refunds to be distributed.
