The Rockdale Girls Softball League has been hosting games and tournaments since the 1980s, but this year’s upcoming season is in limbo due to COVID-19 precautions.

“Unfortunately, we are at a standstill,” RGSL President Pete Rubio said. “We are still waiting to hear something from the Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association.”

Rubio has been the president of the RGSL for eight years. The league has over 200 girls enrolled, but numbers are uncertain this year due to the coronavirus.

Rubio said he enjoyed teaching the girls and providing great team-building activities during the summer.

“Seeing the kids grow and improve their game is probably the best part of my position,” Rubio said. “Anytime I see one of the girls I tell them to please be patient until we get everything figured out.”

Rubio hopes to hear an announcement from the Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association by June.

As part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s next wave of reopenings designed to restart the economy during the coronavirus pandemic, the governor announced that youth sports leagues can start practicing on May 31.

In his press conference Monday, May 18 he said, parents will be allowed to spectate while maintaining safe social distancing.

Professional sports, youth camps and summer programs were all given the go ahead.
