On Monday night in Fayetteville, the Milano Eagle basketball team opened the playoffs with a 66-55 victory over Ganado, the fourth-place team from District 28-2A. The Eagles move on to area and face the winner of Somerville and West Hardin, who played in Willis on Tuesday after press time.
Thorndale also began post-season play earlier this week, but took on Shiner Tuesday after press time. Shiner is the third-place squad from District 28-2A. The Bulldogs ended district with a tie for second with Hearne and due to THS going 1-1 against the Robertson County team this season, no team held the tie-breaker. As a result, coaches from both schools met at Gonzales Mexican Bar & Grill in Rockdale to flip a coin to see which team won second place. As the coin landed on heads, which Thorndale picked, the Bulldogs were named district runner-up.
RHS tracks opens year in Ganado
Rockdale High School Track and Field teams start their season on Thursday in Ganado. The Rockdale Relays are scheduled for Friday, March 3.
Lady Eagles win four in McGregor tourney
Over the weekend, Lady Eagle softball went 4-01 at the McGregor Tournament, beating Jarrell (8-3), host McGregor (101), Comanche (4-2) and Class 4A Lago Vista (201). Milano also tied Belton 2-2.
Kylee Harris and Victoria Balderas each had home runs in the team’s tournament finale with Lago Vista.
The Lady Eagles faced perennial power Rogers on Tuesday after press time and play in a challenging Navasota Tournament over the weekend. Teams MHS will see in Grimes County include 2022 state qualifier Weimar, Magnolia West, College Station, Livingston and Navasota.
Lady Dogs pick up wins in McGregor
Thorndale’s Lady Dog softball team traveled to McGregor this weekend, where they beat Lago Vista 23-0, shut out Midland’s Greenwood 8-0, beat Little River-Academy 10-5 and lost to fellow Class 2A power Italy 12-6.
The Lady Dogs also were host to Smithville last Monday, beating the Lady Tigers 9-8.
THS plays in the La Grange tourney this weekend, where they will see familiar faces including district foe Granger.
